This week Christian Retailing has an interesting article titled, Growing fiction category offers ‘escape'
A snippet...
Thomas Nelson's fiction has seen double-digit growth this year over the previous 12 months, translating to "millions in revenue," according to Allen Arnold, senior vice president and publisher, fiction. Weeks into the new fiscal year, the company is "projecting aggressive growth" for the next year, which includes summer releases from Ted Dekker, Colleen Coble, T.L. Hines and Eric Wilson.
Now I'm a fan of Dekker, Colleen, T.L and Eric's books (the article also spotlight's Multnomah Publishers as well.) But when I read their books I don't think I read them to escape, but to become illuminated. Eric was the first interviewee of Media Candy last year(Thanks, Eric) and has been a writing friend for a while. And I can say this and even for TL that these guys books are so much more than a way to escape, even for them when they write these books.
However, the article buttressed it's statement with historical facts about literature during times of war and depression and that was really something. When we American are living under great challenge to resort to stories about faith to escape from our reality or to give us strength? I hope to think the latter.
