Did the Volcano Screw Your Book Tour?

The Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull keeps spewing ash high into the atmosphere, wreaking havoc upon air travel and seriously dampening the global economy. One of the least obvious -- but far from least suffering -- victims of the volcano has been the book publishing industry. Source DailyFinance:

Did you know that Eyjafjallajokull impacted publishing this week?

  • The Book Depository has suspended operations.
  • The London Book Fair happened, but didn’t happen. As a result Book Expo America registration has picked up.
  • Alexander McCall Smith, author of the #1 Ladies Detective Agency cancelled his North American tour.
  • South African Authors who were the focus of LBF didn’t get the spotlight

Wednesday Writing Tip: Plotting

Here's a great writing tip from Kay Marshall Strom on plotting...

I believe in outlining. I first write up a plot, then I make a chapter-by-chapter outline. Of course it gets changed a lot as I write, but at least I have a map of where I’m going. I write three drafts. The first draft—the composing—takes the most time. (I’m euphoric while I do this! The story seems so, so good!) The second draft is where I do the nuts and bolts, trying to make a work of art out of my lump of clay. (I’m always discouraged here. I think everyone will discover I’m a fraud, that I have no clue what I’m doing!) Then I do a final edit, reading everything out loud. (Middling happy.)

Wednesday Readup: Is it a Beautiful Day for an Apple?

Today is the day that Steve Jobs will reveal his iSlate/Apple Tablet/name in question device that has been rumored to rival all e-readers.

On CNBC yesterday  McGraw-Hill Chairman and CEO Terry McGraw:
Yeah, very exciting. Yes, they'll[Apple] make their announcement tomorrow on this one. We have worked with Apple for quite a while, and the tablet is going to be based on the iPhone operating system, and so it will be transferable.

So what you are going to be able to do now is, we have a consortium of e-books. And we have 95 percent of all our materials that are in e-book format on that one. So now, with the tablet, you're going to open up the higher-education market, the professional market. The tablet is going to be just really terrific.
What makes this device better than what's out and what's still being shipped out there? You'll have to wait until 10 a.m. PST today to find out.

Who will be watching today with me? My chief concern is what will this devise do for digital media? Will it save print publications, publishing? If 44% of Google Readers aren't reading past the links, does that mean we are living in a time of Informaion Overload or growing Adult Illiteracy...wachoothink? Respond here or on Twitter. Use Hashtag #applez

On an off-topic note Ron Marshall has resigned as CEO of Borders Group, Inc. Could Border's drop in holiday sales be the cause of his departure?

Wednesday Readup: Publishing's New Frontier

For the week ending December 17, 2009

Good afternoon. We haven't done a Wednesday Readup in a while. I don't want to flood your email or your blog reader with fluff, so I decided to only post the Readup when there was much to read up on. Well it is.

This week's Readup is a recap of some of the top stories trending regarding publishing and Christian Fiction.

New Book Purchasing down 34%
Bowker released a statement in this week's Publisher's Weekly that The PubTrack survey of book buyers found that 34% of Americans have reduced the number of books they are buying, while 19% of consumers are either buying more used books or swapping books with others."

Question: Is the decline just about the economy or is the rise in American illiteracy rates also a problem? Newsflash 1:7 adults can't read a newspaper. Imagine reading a book. Your thoughts?

Writing as Ministry
Author Angela Benson shares some thoughts and questions she has about writing as ministry. Read here and if you think you have the answers she's welcome to receive them. A good question that I also ask myself. She states, "If writing is ministry, what does it mean that in order to benefit from the ministry one has to buy the book? I’ve never said this aloud but I’ve always equated selling a book and calling it ministry to Rev. Ike selling prayer cloths. If it’s going to bless somebody, why do they have to pay for it?"

Wednesday Readup: Palin, Perry Preys Premiere, A Mercy, Booker List & Free BMP Help

Good Morning. Welcome to the Wednesday Readup for the week of 8/10/08

A Mercy by Toni Morrison: Book Cover
Toni Morrison's A Mercy, a Preview

For those of you who don't know me I am a huge Toni Morrison fan. Actually my background is in African American women's literary fiction moreso than commercial Christian fiction, and to be honest I would love to write a more literary novel. Perhaps that's why I'm stomped on my short story piece for the Essence Short Fiction Contest...As I figure myself out, let me introduce you to Ms. Morrison's new novel, A Mercy.

Synopsis: A Mercy reveals what lies beneath the surface of slavery. But at its heart it is the ambivalent, disturbing story of a mother who casts off her daughter in order to save her, and of a daughter who may never exorcise that abandonment. Acts of mercy may have unforeseen consequences.

Excerpt...

Don't be afraid. My telling can't hurt you in spite of what I have done and I promise to lie quietly in the dark—weeping perhaps or occasionally seeing the blood once more—but I will never again unfold my limbs to rise up and bare teeth. I explain. You can think what I tell you a confession, if you like, but one full of curiosities familiar only in dreams and during those moments when a dog's profile plays in the steam of a kettle. Keeping His Pants On Until He Gets Home

Pastor's wife, Joyce S. Oglesby, felt inspired to write a relationship book out of a heavy heart for couples doomed for divorce without some sort of intervention. Her small town of Corydon, IN is buzzing about the controversial cover and title. Written similarly to the 1970s classic, Total Woman, Keeping His Pants On...Until He Gets Home equips women to affair-proof their marriages. Maintaining a passionate love in marriage has become more urgent than ever before. The demands on today's woman can distract her from fulfilling her husband's sexual needs. Losing focus of this vital responsibility has many women facing the maladies of matrimony. Joyce says, "You're either too tired, too stressed, too fat, too flat-chested, too mad, too sad, too depressed, too dirty, too clean, too selfish, or it's just too much trouble. All this can add up to too little too late!" Her warning is that husbands can soon become distracted, leading to some form of angift basket photo outside physical or emotional affair, pornography, or other avenues of release. The book talks about the dangers of boredom and staleness, and how passionless relationships leave couples unfulfilled, and makes husbands prime targets for temptation.

We are pleased to announce a special contest created for your blog guests. On July 5, 2008 we will have a grand prize drawing for a special gift basket which will include: Keeping His Pants On Until He Gets Hom, a bottle of sparkling apple-cranberry, 1 Beanpod Candles melter, Beach Walk wax soy beads, Bird of Paradise wax soy beads, and 9 tea lights.
