Porno with a Jesus Logo: Why Writing Vertical Matters

PhotobucketLast night I had the pleasure of speaking on the Abundant Solutions Hour radio talk show about Christian Fiction, particularly multicultural works with The Damascus Road authors: Maurice Gray, Jr, Dr. Linda Beed, Wanda B. Campbell, Lacricia Peters, Jacquelin Thomas, Kim Brooks and Christy Award winning author Sharon Foster. Foster reclaimed her role as the godmother of Christian Fiction when she suggested that we writers have to be cognizant of so called Christian books that are nothing more than "Porno with a Jesus Logo." I loved that phrase, and this morning after prayer Sharon's notion returned to me again. AA Writers, I'll call them Gospel Writers, face two prejudiced challenges based on this concept.

1. An Opportunistic ABA: Wolves in Sheep's Clothing

There is a shadow that follows AA Christian authors from the bookstore to the church and to the nightstand table. We are running a different race than our white counterparts. The reason why is because ABA publishing houses no that AA readers are plentiful and Bible raised. We can have a Zane novel on the night stand along with a Sherri Lewis title, and not thinking nothing of it. It's a cultural, philosophical issue, one of Black Womanist Thought that places us in a pickle, so to speak. ABA publishing house recognizes these concepts, do not judge them, but take the opportunity to sell more books, because of it. So they publish novels--faster than you can rake or scrape--with church background on the covers, pastors and pimps in the pulpit, and back cover synopsis that lead a Christian reader to believe that the work is inspired. But it is not. Yet, the book and the author is deeply supported by its publishing house, so much so that galleys are sent out to me months before release date, bookstores are rearranging shelves for great placements of the books, authors are on Top radio, advertised in national print mags and church book tours are launched. These books easily become Essence and NYT bestsellers. Easily.

However, these same books once purchased by church book clubs are damned and thrown out the church. And so their distaste with this "Christian fiction" and the concept of this art is digested and churned over so that churches don't have anything to do with this so called genre. Those authors-without their knowing and will-- have imbrued those-- The Gospel's Writers chances of not only requesting an audience with the same book club, but having the opportunity to participate in Kingdom Building.

Therefore, our task becomes much harder and our mission more vertical. Instead of just writing a story that uplifts God and edifies the Body of Christ, many of us are living and speaking as John the Baptist, crying out and exposing the wolves in sheep's clothing.

This fact is only one side of the problem.

Tomorrow I will share the second side--the CBA side tomorrow. Until then listen to the show below to hear our discussion. Subscribe to CFB, so that you won't miss the rest of this discussion and to stay in the loop about this blog. To commune with many of these authors (33 so far) and myself join The Christian Fiction Network.

Wednesday Read WrapUP: Skid & With Endless Sight

Welcome to a new feature for the summer. The Wednesday Read Wrapup. The Wednesday Read WrapUp will spotlight some new titles that are available for you to purchase at your local bookstore, at the end of this post or the Christian Fiction Astore. These selections will not disappoint. Let's begin...

Book: Skid

Author: Rene Gutteridge

Synopsis: On the Atlantica Flight 1945 from Atlanta to Amsterdam recently jilted Lucy Meredith who is fascinated with The Secret, will be challenged by the sudden appearance of her ex and his new traveling partner, and Hank Hazard, whose unusually polite but odd behavior is linked to a quiet faith that may play a key role in the fate of everyone on board. Especially when an unexpected traveler sets this already bumpy flight on a course toward the unfriendly skies.

My review: This book is funny and romantic and suspenseful. I like. My favorite part is when Hank calls his sister, Cassie to give Lucy advice, with his credit card, while flying over the ocean. Great believable dialogue. I loved that.

'

Book: With Endless Sight

Author: Allison Pittman

Synopsis: Born into a life of privilege, fourteen-year-old Belinda never questions her security, even as she leaves Illinois with her family to discover new adventures in the Oregon Territory. But when disaster falls, Belinda is left wounded, weak, and alone. Her faith in God gives her the only strength she knows in a harsh new world.

My Review: Very well written. From the first sentence I found myself transported to 1861. Granted someone of my ethnicity wouldn't want to live there now, it was nice to go back for a while and see Montana. :)

The Young Adult Christian Edge
Exorsistah

Last week Publisher's Weekly spotlighted Zondervan, FaithWords, Multnomah, NavPress, Thomas Nelson and my Write-or-die-chick, Claudia Mair Burney's The Exorsistah in an article about the rise in edgy contemporary young adult Christian novels.
Clearly, it's tough to balance depicting the rough stuff of adolescence in a realistic way without offending conservative sensibilities. Novelist Claudia Mair Burney understands this tension well. “Christian fiction seems to play it safe so often, but adolescence is inherently unsafe,” she explains. “If we can't show Christ as redeemer in the midst of people cutting themselves, starving themselves or having sex before they're ready, why would we write at all?” Burney's latest YA novel, The Exorsistah, comes out from Pocket on July 22 and will push some buttons: it's about a homeless teenage girl with a spiritual gift for discerning demons. “Exorcism is not child's play,” warns Burney.
Way to go, Claudia!

Weekend Chatterbox: God's Secret Providence

Based on the Novel, Fatal Deduction, is this Weekend's Chatterbox question.

Have you had the experience of having God care for you and provided for you even though you didn't realize it at the time? Have you been changed by God's Secret Providence (Hebrews 13:5)

It happened to me last year when I felt my sanity slipping away after losing my second child, losing seven years of writing, leaving my home and leaving my ex-husband again. As I lost and had to start over this year I was broken. How could I parent Selah through all of this? Could I find peace in my soul again? Would I stop mourning the child I lost and the love of my life? Was I still worthy?

Almost a year later I can look back and see God moving me to a better me whether I knew it or not. The thought of that snuggles me as I still continue to answer my tough questions.

As a writer I still don't know, but I am writing to see what the end will be. And I'm waiting to hear from you.

Blessings and don't forget to chat with me, Kathleen Popa and Brandon Satrom on Monday at 2pm EST, as we discuss Roper's Book and your Chatterbox comments.
