Book Marketing Don'ts You Will Not Take Into 2009

2008 is about to shut it's door, but before it does here are five book marketing don'ts you should leave behind it:

  1. 1. Only Marketing Online via Social Media
True. Online Marketing is a great way to connect with fans and farm new ones, but social media servicing is not the end all. In 2009 make a commitment to introduce other forms of online marketing into your marketing plan like forums, newsletters, articles and so much more.

2. Be a Ghost Writer in Your Home Town.

When I ask potential clients about their reach. Ten times out of ten they know that know they haven't done the best job sharing their gifts with their community. In 2009 make a commitment to give your writing as a gift to your community. Host a book event, teach a course, judge an elementary school writing contest, become a localebrity.

Read the rest here.

Best of 2008: Barry's The Secret Scripture

There are books that are good reads. There are books that are good stories. There are books with unforgettable characters. And then there are books that are superbly pitch perfect, all of three. Sebastian Barry's The Secret Scripture(Penguin) is that kind of book.

Summary:

As a young woman, Roseanne McNulty was one of the most beautiful and beguiling girls in County Sligo, Ireland. Now, as her hundredth year draws near, she is a patient at Roscommon Regional Mental Hospital, and she decides to record the events of her life.

As Roseanne revisits her past, hiding the manuscript beneath the floorboards in her bedroom, she learns that Roscommon Hospital will be closed in a few months and that her caregiver, Dr. Grene, has been asked to evaluate the patients and decide if they can return to society. Roseanne is of particular interest to Dr. Grene, and as he researches her case he discovers a document written by a local priest that tells a very different story of Roseanne’s life than what she recalls. As doctor and patient attempt to understand each other, they begin to uncover long-buried secrets about themselves.

Set against an Ireland besieged by conflict, The Secret Scripture is an epic story of love, betrayal, and unavoidable tragedy, and a vivid reminder of the stranglehold that the Catholic Church had on individual lives for much of the twentieth century.

Shortlisted for the 2008 Man Book Prize. Read this excerpt for a taste of Roseanne McNulty's secret scripture...

When I was ten or so my father in a fit of educating enthusiasm brought me to the top of the long thin tower in the graveyard. It was one of those beautiful, lofty slim buildings made by monks in a time of danger and destruction. It stood in a nettled corner of the graveyard and was not much remarked on. When you had grown up in Sligo it was just there. But no doubt it was a treasure beyond compare, put up with only a murmur of mortar between the stones, each one remembering the curve of the tower, each one set in with perfect success by ancient masons. Of course it was a Catholic yard. My father had not got that job because of his religion, but because he was deeply liked in the town by all and sundry, and the Catholics did not mind their graves being dug by a Presbyterian, if it was a likeable one. Because in those days there was often much greater ease between the churches than we give credit for, and it is often forgotten that under the old penal laws in vanished days the dissenting churches were just as harried, as he often liked to point out. At any rate, there is seldom a difficulty with religion where there is friendship. And it was only later that this distinction in him made any difference. At any rate I know he was exceedingly liked by the parish priest, a little perky darting man called Father Gaunt who loomed so large later in my own story, if a small man can be said to loom large.

Those were the days just after the first war, and maybe in those ditches of history as it were, minds turn to strangenesses, quirks of education such as he was bent on that day with me. Otherwise I cannot explain why a grown man would take his child to the top of an old tower with a bag of hammers and feathers.

Trailer Park Tuesday: Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns, the Sitcom

Meet the Browns, the sitcom airs on TBS on January 7, 2009.

Premise: MEET THE BROWNS stars Leroy Brown (David Mann), one of Tyler Perry’s most popular characters, as he transforms his inheritance – a dilapidated house – into Brown Meadows. It’s not the sprawling, green facility of geriatric dreams, but small, quaint and filled with quirky residents and employees struggling to keep their lives in order. Combine that with a lively fraternity house bustling with collegiate activity next door, and Brown gets way more than he bargained for.

Best of 2008: Morrison's A Mercy

I have been excited for the past few months, anticipating my favorite part of the year, counting down my idea of the best novels written with Christian themes. I call these books Gospel Fiction. Throughout the week I will share these books and recap all the books I've covered here this year as well. I hope you enjoy.

My first pick. Noble laureate Toni Morrison's A Mercy.

An excerpt...

A praying savage, neighbors call her[Lina,] because she is once churchgoing yet she bathes herself every day and Christians never do. Underneath she wears bright blue beads and dances in secret at first light when the moon is small. More than fear of loving bears or birds bigger than cows, I fear pathless night. How, I wonder, can I find you in the dark? Now at last there is a way. I have orders. It is arranged. I will see your mouth and trail my fingers down. You will rest your chin in my hair again while I breathe into your shoulder in and out, in and out. I am happy the world is breaking open for us, yet its newness trembles me. To get to you I must leave the only home, the only people I know. Lina says from the state of my teeth I am maybe seven or eight when I am brought here. We boil wild plums for jam and cake eight times since then, so I must be sixteen.
Why it's one of my top picks?

What I loved so much about this novel is Morrison's storytelling ability and how she uses prose to create such vulnerable and vivid characters.

The story has POV shifts that blend and blur. For someone unfamiliar with Faulkner or southern romanticism in literature her writing albeit different at first, is a slow, rich, savory morsel of book eating. You will savor every page of this short novel.

Return tomorrow and I will share my next pick. It comes from an unlikely source.
