Weekend Read & Bath Luxe: Faithful & J.R. Watkins Lemon Body Oil

Although I have a full weekend of book events to attend, and another book to write, I still make time for my Weekend Read. It has been a tradition since I founded The Suwanee Social Reading Club ten years ago. A bubble bath and a good book on the weekend. Great stuff. So this is my pick for this weekend read. Kim Cash Tate’s Faithful (Thomas Nelson/Women of Faith, 2010, Christian Fiction)

Synopsis: Cydney Sanders thought she knew God's plan for her life. She'd marry, have kids, and then snap her body back into shape with Tae Bo. But she's celebrating her fortieth birthday as the maid of honor at her little sister's wedding . . . and still single. Why would God give her this desire to marry, but no husband? And why is her life suddenly complicated by the best man--who's the opposite of what she wants in a husband?

Cydney's best friend Dana has the perfect marriage. But when Dana discovers her husband's affair, her world goes into a tailspin. And Phyllis is out of hope after six years of unanswered prayers for her husband to find faith. When she runs into an old friend who is the Christian man she longs for, she's faced with an overwhelming choice.

With life falling apart around them, can these three friends trust God like never before?

The line that hooked me…

Now that she[Cyd] was one day away, she still had no problem with forty. It was the other stuff that had shown up with it—forty, never been married, childless, Bow, despite her distinguished career as a Classics professor at Washington University in St. Louis, she was questioning her path and her purpose and the fact that she was forced to ring it in as maid of honor at her younger sister’s wedding…her much younger sister.

Although I have read stories with similar premises, there is something about the execution of this plot, how I immediately felt comfortable with Cyd, the rhythm of her words…I care about her. This is very important for me. I review so many books. I promote authors and I am writing my own novels, so I’ve become a book snob when it comes to my reading time. This book is worth my time. I like it so much I will be interviewing Kim for the next issue of Christian Fiction Online Magazine.

You can pick up your copy and read with me.

Of course, I have a bath luxe recommendation to go with the book. My galpal DeeDee got me hooked on J.R. Watkins Pure Lemon body oil. It’s great in the bath and as a moisturizer. Bonus: It makes you smell sweet and tingly fresh.

The Crimson Cypher

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

The Crimson Cipher
Summerside Press (July 1, 2010)

by
Susan Page Davis

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

From Susan: I've always loved reading, history, and horses. These things come together in several of my historical books. My young adult novel, Sarah's Long Ride, also spotlights horses and the rugged sport of endurance riding, as does the contemporary romance Trail to Justice. I took a vocational course in horseshoeing after earning a bachelor's degree in history. I don't shoe horses anymore, but the experience has come in handy in writing my books.

Another longtime hobby of mine is genealogy, which has led me down many fascinating paths. I'm proud to be a DAR member! Some of Jim's and my quirkier ancestors have inspired fictional characters.

For many years I worked for the Central Maine Morning Sentinel as a freelancer, covering local government, school board meetings, business news, fires, auto accidents, and other local events, including a murder trial. I've also written many profiles and features for the newspaper and its special sections. This experience was a great help in developing fictional characters and writing realistic scenes. I also published nonfiction articles in several magazines and had several short stories appear in Woman's World, Grit, and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.

My husband, Jim, and I moved to his birth state, Oregon, for a while after we were married, but decided to move back to Maine and be near my family. We're so glad we did. It allowed our six children to grow up feeling close to their cousins and grandparents, and some of Jim's family have even moved to Maine!

Our children are all home-schooled. The two youngest are still learning at home. Jim recently retired from his vocation as an editor at a daily newspaper, and we’ve moved from Maine to Kentucky.

ABOUT THE BOOK

IT'S 1915, AND EMMA SHUSTER HAS FAR TOO MUCH ON HER MIND TO ENTERTAIN NOTIONS OF ROMANCE...

A female Navy cryptographer seeks to save lives...and uncover her father’s killers.

In 1915, German sympathizers escalated acts of sabotage in the United States to keep the nation from joining in the war. With enemies lurking at every turn, whom can Emma trust? Is romance the true motive behind her tow suitors advances? Or could one-or both of them-have traitorous intentions in mind?

Following the mysterious murder of Emma Shuster’s father, Lt. John Patterson invites Emma to become a Navy cryptographer because of the expertise she gained in helping her father develop a cipher system.

Emma races to discover the nefarious plans of her country's foes and unmask their leader before others are killed. She finds new strength in her faith as she strives to outwit her adversary, known only as Kobold - German for goblin.

And yet, her greatest challenge may be deciphering the cryptic messages her heart sends whenever she encounters a certain navy lieutenant... Can Emma and John find love in the midst of turmoil as America plunges toward war?

Are You the Answer to Your Writing Problem?

Realizing Our Greatness in Our Writing Part 1

academics, expressions, females, girls, pencils, people, photographs, students, sweaters, writes, writingsI tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” -John 14: 12(NIV)

Last week, as I completed the August 2010 Top Ten Release List for Christian Fiction Blog, I found myself concerned. Although the titles that were chosen deserve to be there, I was hoping for more competitive works to choose from.

I was hoping to read prose better than Mick Silva’s “Upon Being Laid Off” post last week. I was hoping to read something indulging and awe-inspiring like Sharon Ewell Foster’s upcoming historical The Resurrection of Nat Turner.  I was hoping to be moved in such a way, while reading that I would stop and kneel, lay prostrate on the floor, run to God’s voice,  and move on up a little higher, because those words were so caught up in magnifying Him that my soul glowed from the inside out. Selah.

I was hoping for greatness  What I found—what I’ve been finding these last few months-- was mediocrity and lots of it, which troubled me(myself included). Because somehow, somewhere we have decided to  settle for less in our writing (myself included.)  We have decided to publish less than  greatness. We have allowed the world to dictate to us what is good.  We  sprinkle itself on us. Unfortunately, I have good news for us.

I don’t believe God created us to be mediocre. I don’t believe He anointed his artists to lack great craftmanship. Even in Christ word’s to us He says that we can do even greater things through Him. So what are we doing? Why are we slipping?

I believe it’s because we do not realize who we are. We have forgotten how GREAT we are. So for a while, I think I need to remind you. But I also have to warn you of a few things.
