What theme that resonated from both was this need for connection. My family and I love movies. It is one of our chief pasttimes. Watching movies I can talk with Selah about us without her thinking this is a parent talk.
So when I received For Parents Only in the mail I was pleasantly surprised. It is a small book that can fit in a shoulder bag or in your hand. so its easy to grab reference material. What's the best part about the book is that this book is derived from more than 1200 kids. Their responses buttress the points in this book. I love this fact, because there are things that Selah do--she's seven, not a teen--mimic what teenage girls do. This helps me figure out what is going on with her, so that I can guide her into growing up in the best way I can and also add my faith into her walk toward maturity. I am also finding out some things about myself. Why I lashed out at my mom and dad at times. Why I put up with not-so-good friends. I tell you this book is good. You don't have to be a parent for this one. I think this book is a great gift for all.

I just read about that book on a different blog, I like what you've said about it and it makes me want to read it.
A tradition we share is on Zane's birthday (my son) we wake him up with lots of love and most of the time a piece of cake or a cupcake and then when he really wakes up and gets going, we look through his baby scrapbooks I made and I tell him his birth story, how he was conceived on a very special day, how I went into labor when daddy wasn't home, how the dog got sprayed by a skunk before I left for the hospital and all of the other great stuff about the day he was born.
He loves to look at the pictures and hear stories about himself.
Our favorite holiday tradition has to be breakfast Christmas morning. My oldest Daughter and I get up (before the sun!!) and make christmas breakfast, I mean a real spread!! eggs, pancakes, bacon, homefries, grits, sausage, grapefruit, the works. I was doing this alone before the kids got up but the past 2 years my daughter gets up with me and helps.
We sit and eat and talk about goals and aspirations and life, before the mad dash for gifts.
And no one opens a gift until breakfast is over AND cleaned up (so everyone helps clean to move it along faster!).
so that is our #1 tradition!
