Christian Fiction News for the week ending June 24, 2008
Novelist with an edge
ZOndervan's Tom Morrisey talks about scuba diving and his new wilderness adventure novel, Wind River in the Orlando Sentinel. From the interview...
Is it difficult to integrate faith and action/adventure in your novels?
I'm an evangelical Christian, so I don't find that difficult at all because when I read the Gospels, I'm reading about Jesus and the disciples camping out under the stars -- they're carrying swords, they're walking through enemy territory, they're on boats in the midst of storms. So when I read the Gospels, what I really see is kind of a collection of the things that intensely interest me.
This weekend I've been reading the ACFW loop and responding to emails to me about The Shack, the novel. Now Campus Life has joined in the fray.
What I loved about Brandon O'Briens Campus Life article is that it showed balanced and non-biased points of view on the novel, and left the question up for discussion to those who have read the novel. I stress read.

More Shack Attack
Mark Driscoll, who is concerned that Young’s vision of God the Father is an African-American woman called “Papa,” says, It’s goddess worship. If God the Father is really God the Mother, that changes everything…If God reveals himself to us as father, we are to honor him as father."Not for nothing, but as an African-American woman I have heard this whole assault on Papa's visit too many times this week to be mildly offended. Not at Young, but at all the Evangelical critics who seems to only harp on God as an African woman thing as very, very wrong. I'm starting to feel twinges of racism lurking about in these reviews somewhere. Is this why CBA don't have many black christian writers? God can't be seen through us?

So then, if I read The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, am I lion worshiping because Aslan is the hero of the fictional tale?
I think you're spot on about the racism thing.
Thanks, Michelle. I was hoping I wasn't sounding to conspiracy theory-esque, but I found that constant reference pretty odd.
I was thinking the same thing about the Lion, The With and The Wardrobe later. Glad you added it.
