My response:
Dee Stewart:
No. I'm an African-American writer. Regardless of what I write, even if I don't include skin color as a descriptive of my characters. As a journalist, I'm pigeonholed to covering Christian news that affects African American audiences. I don't think it is fair, but I also think prejudice in this country isn't fair either,. My aunt, Doreatha is born on Independence Day and I remember as a child she not being able to celebrate, because she was a maid. She had to spend that day catering to others. She never had a vacation. It was expected of her to work. She is 74 years old and I didn't know until three years ago that she has always wanted to be a poet. She writes poetry now and is my first reader and biggest champion. That gives me some solace. I pray that my daughter can express herself and her love for our God anywhere when she is my age.
I invite you to The Master's Artist this week to share your writer's experience or leave your comments here.
