I will not be at the Peach Drop or the Black Hollywood Party at the Velvet Room tonight. Honey, I'll be at Watchnight Service at St. Phillip AME Church on the corner of Candler and Memorial in Atlanta, GA, praising God and wondering how I made it over. Watchnight was once a Methodist tradition, but has transformed into an African-American Holiday, a reminder of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation, and also the sixth day of Kwanzaa, Kuumba.
Kuumba means creativity. Perfect for a master's artist to reflect on the death of the year and prepare for the birth of a new one. Like the phoenix rising, young writers, we await a new dawn. We emerge. But if we won't to take flight right, we need to observe the watchnight. We need to watch and pray. Over what?
