Christian Fiction News: Biafra Resurrected

This morning when I opened my email I rejoiced. In this month's Books & Culture, Susan VanZanten Gallagher wrote an interesting article about my favorite book of 2006, Ngozi Adichie's Half of A Yellow Sun. She began the article introducing Adichie as an emerging Nigerian writer and then shares why she thinks Adichie is pushing past her counterparts.
While the latest work of the Big Three has turned toward satirical political allegory—see for example Achebe's Anthills of the Savannah (1987), Soyinka's King Baabu (2002), and Ngugi's Wizard of the Crow (2006)—Adichie has opted instead to employ a sprawling Dickensian narrative to depict the all-too-common post-independence African cycle of cynicism, coups, and corruption. Her epic exploration of the themes of authentic identity, love, and sacrifice employs realism rather than the strategies more commonly found in African fiction today: self-conscious metafiction, broad allegory, or magic realism.

...[Half of a Yellow Sun]The novel's complex structure and psychological realism are supported by an elegant prose sparingly spiced with metaphors and sensual detail. Adichie captures the sights, smells, and texture of Nigerian life, with vivid accounts of intricately embroidered agbadas, pepper soup, chicken boiled in bitter herbs, armpit powder, and the melodious sounds of High Life, the popular Nigerian dance music of the Sixties that was one of first contemporary fusions of African and Western music.

Question: As we celebrate the life of MLK, Jr. here in America this month, how would we Christian authors depict and build a compelling story about the Civil Rights movement?

How will MLK's Dream Live in You?

As we celebrate the life of Rev. Dr. Martin King, Jr. today I've been thinking about my life and my daughter, Selah. How has dream affected me and her? And how will his dream live in me? And I thought about Christian Fiction. I received a cute new novel from Rebeca Seitz, Sisters Ink. From the cover I assume an African-American characters lives between the pages. I'm anxiously awaiting Nicole Seitz latest, Trouble the Water. She writes great stories about a culture of people whom I belong and she's not African-American. Claudia Burney's Murder, Mayhem & a Fine Man has a love triangle with a forensic psychologists, a detective, and a non-denominational pastor, who's white. Claudia's not white. And there's Mary Griffin and her Shades of Style Series. Christian Fiction is taking the dream and putting it in story. I am glad to see that. So I ask you as I continue to ask myself: How will MLK"S Dream Live in You?

My Weekend Chatter Box Response: Christian Curse

Great responses regina and anon, and here is the rub.

As a Christian I believe in the Apostles Creed, and live by the Jesus Creed.

Therefore, as a Christian artist I believe that our job is to create works that edify the Body of Christ, illuminate the lost, and glorify God. My issue--as well as my Christian author friends--is how do you do all of this and create a piece of work that is authentic and glorious at the same time?

I am still researching and studying the Word for answers.

But what I have discovered so far is that Christian artists put themselves in two distinct camps. Whether you agree with them or not all believe that their works encourage Kingdom Building.

My purpose at Christian Fiction Blog is to supply both audiences of these two different camps a platform for their works to be exposed. Those types are:

1. Traditionally CBA, whereby their content, dialogue, theme and story encompasses a worldview that seeks to create a reading experience void of temptation for their readers: no profanity, sex, violence, theology questioning.

2. Edgy Christian/Inspirational ABA, whereby their content seeks to create a worldview that encompasses a believer who lives in the world, but not of the world. They do not write with the babe in Christ in mind, they write with the lost in mind. Their position is to bring an unbeliever to Christ by creating works that are illuminating, but comfortable and unpreachy, so that the seeker has a platform to wonder about the awesome glory of God.

Which artist does Christ prefer?

If you look at the diversity of the disciples one would think he would choose them both. After all Simon Peter was less than a saint.

And since I am the last person to judge what a Christian should do, I will leave the judgment up to Christ and the marketplace. If you don't want to support these artists, then don't, but please don't debase them. A church divided never prevails against the Wicked.

Thus, please do not assume that they will not have a place here at Christian Fiction Blog. Because if there is one person out there seeking to know Christ and they stumble upon my blog I want them to connect and stay a while. As they grow in spiritual maturity--like most of us--God will change their tastes. Let's be patient for our sisters and brothers.

And please be patient with me.

If you know of any gospel plays touring that you want to share with us, please pass them onto us.

Be blessed,
Dee

Can Christians Curse?

Today I received a question from a reader. The question: So if Tyler Perry's marriage counselor show is being advertised on Christian Fiction, can I assume there is no bad language in this show?

I answered the question here. but I thought I should extend this discussion to the CFB Mybloglog Crew, Christian Fiction Network, my MySpace Friends and readers here at CFB as our Weekend Chat.

Do you think a play, movie or book can be be Christian and contain profanity? You can respond anonymously, if you wish.
